FT-15 & F&T Steam Traps: Specs, Applications, and Maintenance Tips
Share
Overview of the FT-15 and F&T Steam Traps
The Spirax Sarco FT-15 is part of a proven series of float & thermostatic (F&T) steam traps designed for continuous condensate discharge at steam temperature, with built-in air venting to speed system startup. Along with the FT-30, FT-75, and FT-125 models, this series covers a wide range of pressure ratings for different applications.
The cast iron body and stainless steel internals offer a balance of durability and cost-effectiveness, making these traps a dependable choice for heating systems, process equipment, and distribution lines.
How the FT-15 Works
An internal stainless steel ball float rises and falls with condensate levels, opening the valve as needed for continuous discharge. A separate balanced-pressure thermostatic air vent automatically releases non-condensable gases. This combination ensures:
- Efficient condensate removal without cooling the steam space
- Faster system warm-up by venting air quickly
- Resistance to water hammer damage
Model Options and Pressure Ratings
- FT-15: 15 psig
- FT-30: 30 psig
- FT-75: 75 psig
- FT-125: 125 psig
All models can operate up to 450°F and are available in sizes from ¾" to 2" NPT.
Typical Applications
- Process equipment with modulating temperature control valves
- Unit heaters and air coils in commercial or industrial facilities
- Heat exchangers in HVAC or manufacturing systems
- Steam main drip stations for condensate removal in distribution piping
Installation Best Practices
To get the most out of an FT-series trap:
- Install a strainer upstream to protect the trap from debris
- Position the trap below the drainage point of the equipment, with a collecting leg before the trap
- Keep the float arm horizontal for proper operation
- Follow the flow direction indicated on the trap body
Maintenance Guidance
These traps can be serviced without removing them from the line—a valuable time-saver during seasonal maintenance. Periodic inspection is recommended to check the valve seat, float mechanism, and air vent for wear. Replacement kits are available for quick rebuilds.
Seasonal Planning Tip
With cooler months approaching, it’s worth reviewing steam trap performance before higher heating demands set in. Addressing trap issues now can prevent inefficiency, cold spots, or unexpected downtime during peak season.
